DRiveR Academy

Begin your career in transport with the only academy of it’s kind in Mid-Wales offering a company funded HGV driver training programme

We invest, We Train, We go further

What is the Driver Academy?

Since 2016 we have been putting the next generation of transport people through their HGV class 2 and class 1 licences, at no cost to them. In the Speed driver academy, you start in a role such as warehouse operations or our 3.5T van driving team. Here you will gain valuable skills and develop your knowledge in transport. In due course, Speed will fund your HGV Cat C (Class 2), which qualifies you in rigid vehicles. You will then be able to drive our 18-ton HGVs. Further down the line, we will put you through your HGV Cat CE (Class 1), which allows you to drive 44-ton artics.

Why Speed?

  • Variety and flexibility: because we run a distribution network and general haulage fleet, you have the opportunity to taste different types of transport work. If you dream of long-distance tramping and the life on the road, you can set your sights on haulage. If you prefer being at home every night and like the local area, then local and regional network driving may be for you. Maybe you want to try both before making your mind up - you can with us.

  • It’s free: we pay for all of your training through our partnership with Dulson Training in Shrewsbury. Ongoing driver CPC training is also arranged by us.

  • We are leading and professional: we are a long established, stable business, and a FORS Bronze accredited operator. We run high specification vehicles kitted out specifically for our drivers.

  • Opportunity: transport and logistics is an incredibly lucrative career path. You could expect to earn £38-60k per year as a HGV driver, depending on hours and role. A career as Speed is a journey. You may find, in time, that you prefer to go a route of transport or operations management instead, this is also a possibility with us.

At School or College?

You may be confused by career options and which way to go. If you’re even a tiny bit interested in trucks, transport or the supply chain, it might be worth a chat to learn more about this exciting industry. We are happy to talk to you and give you an industry insight; but not only that, as someone who has been there too. Back in the mid/late 2000s, I was in exactly the same boat and I recognise it would have been great to have someone in industry to talk to. If you’d like to talk, fill out the below form and I’ll come back to you.
